Way back in 1993, I found myself single after divorcing from my first wife. After a year and a half of living my life as a single part time dad, I realized that if I only relied on faith to meet a life partner and that I could end up living alone for a long time. I wasn’t (and sill am) the type to go out too much and did not (and still does not) had a big circle of friends. I’m more of a family-work-family type of guy.
Internet Dating did not really exist yet and Russian Brides were less popular than the “cold war” in those years. Reading the Saturday newspaper, I began looking at the “Singles” section and found it interesting that there were other people who seemed as desperate as I was at finding a suitable life partner. So, I put an ad in the local and Montreal newspapers hoping to find my princess.
If I remember well, putting the ad in the paper was free but the surprise came when I tried to retrieve my messages – it was a 900 number with charges in the neighbourhood of 1.99 a minute and as always, one has to use several minutes before learning the basic of the system. So, it was not really in the budget of a part time single dad.
After several weeks of responding to ads and following up to inquiries on my ad, I had several unsuccessful meetings. Nice meetings but it wouldn’t click one way or another. The perpetual story: if I found the lady interesting: she wouldn’t think such of me and vice-versa.
The months went by and my phone bill began taking part of my budget. Just as I was ready to abandon, I met a nice lady with who it clicked. We lived about an hour away from each other but agreed it wasn’t going to be a problem if our relationship was to develop in the right direction.
