It is 1997; I am a working-family-working not too outgoing single part time dad. After a difficult break up from my girlfriend, I finally recuperated and was ready to begin a new quest for my second half. As I did in 1993, I read the singles section in the Saturday newspaper and checked what others had to say, how they made their listings interesting and I went to the drawing board. To gain maximum visibility, I had my ad in a few local newspapers and in the Montreal newspapers. I contacted several women who seemed to be a match and responded to several inquiries. The weeks, months and meetings cumulated but although they were mostly interesting meetings, there was no mutual “click”.
At the same time, I began exploring internet dating websites. It seemed every month a new dating website would come up on the web. I made some research and choose to work with 2 which looked quite popular and displayed thousands of profiles of men and women from the greater Montreal area.
This concept of dating on the internet was quite new and at this time, I had no idea that websites could exist to search for a Russian bride. And I wasn’t ready for international matchmaking yet; I truly believed I would find my life partner locally.
I was quite excited at this new way to search for a life partner. It was like shopping for… a woman. Lots of profiles, nice pictures, detailed self-descriptions – and all this shopping could be done from the comfort of my home, sitting behind a computer screen. Of course, all of this wasn’t free. There were monthly subscription charges and all kinds of extras.
But I believed it would help me find my life partner and there was on price for this. So, I registered with those two popular sites and created a detailed profile with lots of pictures. I soon found myself spending most of my free time browsing profiles and writing letters expecting those beautiful ladies to write me back. Unfortunately, the weeks went by and did not get many replies.
